Manila, Philippines – THE Canadian government has committed to provide P70 million (Cad$ 1.75million) as additional assistance to the victims of typhoon Pablo which devastated Mindanao and parts of the Visayas last week.
In a statement issued on Friday, the Canadian Embassy in Manila said this is in addition to its initial contribution of P10 million (Cad$ 250,000) to the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies to support the Philippine Red Cross in helping approximately 50,000 people affected by the typhoon.
“Canada is responding to the increasing needs of the people of the Philippines as they face the alarming devastation caused by the typhoon,” said Minister of International Cooperation Julian Fantino. “We are helping families survive by providing critical humanitarian assistance,” he added.
The Canadian embassy said Canada’s assistance, through the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), will support the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) to provide access to emergency food assistance to reduce the vulnerability of crisis-affected people, especially women and children.
The Canadian embassy said it will continue to monitor the situation to ensure humanitarian needs are met and provide further assistance if required. (Roy C. Mabasa)
