PBA: Abueva eyes MVP, ROY awards

Calvin AbuevaManila, Philippines – Calvin Abueva, Alaska’s do-it-all guy, is on track to becoming the second player to win the Rookie of the Year and Most Valuable Player awards on the same year.

The six-foot-one Abueva is running second in the Statistical Points race with an average of 32.7 SP after averaging 14.6 points and 10.2 rebounds with 2.1 assists and 1.6 steals through 10 games.

On top of the SP race is Petron Blaze’s Arwind Santos with 35.9 SP, averaging 17.7 points and league-best 12.1 rebounds in 14 games. The 6-foot-3 Santos also has 1.6 assists, 1.1 steals and 1.5 shot blocks.

Santos and Abueva, who are both from Pampanga, are the only players to average double-double in points and rebounds categories.

With both their teams in the playoffs, they are hotly contesting the Best Player of the Conference honor.

Abueva only joined Alaska in its fourth game of the all-Filipino conference because of his commitment to San Sebastian College, a team he powered to the NCAA championship in 2009.

Since his debut, Abueva missed just a single game because of nasal infection.

Abueva provides the energy for Alaska, running up and down the court, hustling and diving for loose ball, grabbing rebounds, and making “daredevil” moves to the basket.

The first and only player to win both awards on the same year was Shell’s Benjie Paras who did the trick in 1989.

Four players from defending champion and playoff No.1 seed Talk ’N Text are in the Top 10 SP with Jayson Castro at No. 3 (31.9), Kelly Williams at No. 5 (29.3), Ranidel de Ocampo at No. 8 (28.64) and Larry Fonacier at No. 9 (28.57).

Meralco’s Sol Mercado, the points (19.2) and assists (6.5) leaders, is at No. 4 with 31.1 SP.

Completing the Top 10 in SP race are Rain or Shine’s Jeff Chan at No. 6 (28.8) and San Mig Coffee’s James Yap at No. 7 (28.7), while Cyrus Baguio of Alaska and Mark Caguioa of Barangay Ginebra are tied for No. 10 (28.4).

Abueva and TNT’s Ryan Reyes are so far the assist leaders with 1.6 per game, while Santos also leads the conference in shot block with 1.5.
