The Blue Eagles clinched the second and last championship berth after beating back-to-back NCAA champion San Beda College, 66-49, in the final day of the single round robin semifinals last night at the Filoil Arena in San Juan.
Ateneo unleashed a big 18-0 run that turned a 28-26 halftime lead to 46-26 with 3:02 left in the third quarter. For the whole period, the Eagles allowed the Red Lions to just a pair of field goals as they took a 48-31 advantage going to the final frame.
San Beda made it a 10-point game, 48-38, when Baser Amer nailed a three-pointer with 7:35 to play.
But when Ateneo starters Greg Slaugter, Nico Salva, Kiefer Ravena and Juami Tiongson re-entered the game, they combined for 10 unanswered points to bring the lead back to 20 points, 58-48, with just four minutes left in the game.
Salva led Ateneo with 16 points, while the 7-foot Slaughter had a double-double 11 points and 12 rebounds. Tiongson also collected 11 points, while Ravena finished with eight points, seven boards, eight assists and three steals.
