Manila, Philippines –Truth about claims on food quality and safety can now be accurately checked through electronic sensing devices that mimic human senses.
The Industrial Technology Development Institute (ITDI) of the Department of Science and Technology (DoST) has introduced the electronic tongue (e-tongue) and electronic nose (e-nose) to check and evaluate the quality and safety of food products as claimed by producers and manufacturers. The ITDI is now using the electronic sensing equipment.
Christopher Bilbao, ITDI senior research specialist, said the two devices use many sensors that analyze samples of a particular product. He said parameters are inputted on the devices, depending on what is to be analyzed. Based on the parameters, the e-tongue and e-tongue would come out with findings for the researchers to interpret.
