Manila, Philippines – Whenever Jorge Arce shows up at the Romanza Gym in Mexico City, he speaks of nothing else but Nonito Donaire.
“He always talks about him (Donaire),“ relayed Mexican boxing scribe Erika Montoya to the Bulletin over the weekend.
Montoya, who writes for the newspaper Record, paid a visit to the Romanza Gym last week to check on the training of Juan Manuel Marquez but could not help but notice the presence of Arce, who battles Donaire on Dec. 15 at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas.
Arce has sought the expertise of Romanza Gym big boss Nacho Beristain, who also trains Marquez, as he gets ready for the skillful Filipino-American puncher.
Arce’s decision to tap Beristain is meant to address his attacking style.
Known for his devil-may-care attitude on top of the ring, Arce has to alter his gameplan a bit against somebody like Donaire and hooking up with Beristain could do wonders.
Donaire is fresh from posting a trouble-free win over Japanese Toshiaki Nishioka and is already aching to get his hands on the brash Arce.
Arce said that he would be very much unlike Donaire’s victims because he is not afraid-and even looks forward to trading blows with him.
Meanwhile, Donaire and Arce will get to size each other up on Thursday in Houston when Top Rank head Bob Arum holds a press conference formally announcing the fight. (Nick Giongco)
