PNP needs 60,000 more cops

Manila, Philippines – The expected arrival of more service handguns has given the Philippine National Police (PNP) the guts to welcome the planned recruitment of additional 60,000 cops.

Director General Nicanor A. Bartolome, PNP chief, said even past police leaderships have qualms to back up the recruitment of more cops, saying it would seem unrealistic to even discuss any hiring since they cannot even equip their existing personnel with enough firepower.

“At any rate, we can take in as many recruits as our funds can allow. We even have enough handguns in our inventory to equip new recruits,” said Bartolome.

The PNP initially bid out the procurement of 59,904 pieces of Glock 17 Generation 4 which was won by Trust Trade. The initial delivery of 12,000 pieces of handguns is expected to be in December this year. The expected completion of the delivery is by next year.

The government earlier released some P1.2 billion for the 59,904 pieces of handguns but with the contract price pegged at only P998 million, Bartolome said the PNP is planning to use the P200 million savings for the procurement of additional handguns.

Addressing the national convention of the Association of Government Accountants of the Philippines (AGAP) in Cebu City over the weekend, Bartolome echoed earlier pronouncements made by the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) indicating moves to hike the PNP effective strength by as much as 60,000 personnel within the next three years to provide better services to the communities.

Bartolome said there is a need to recruit more uniformed members of the police force in order to meet the ideal police to population ratio of one policeman for every 500 citizens (1:500). (Aaron B. Recuenco)
