Camiguin Province 33rd Lanzones Festival

Manila, Philippines – CAMIGUIN is a small province in Northern Mindanao. It is a pear-shaped volcanic island bounded by Butuan Bay on the east, Macajalar Bay on the west, Bohol Sea on the north, and Gingoog Sea on the Southeast. It has five towns, namely, Mambajao, Mahinog, Guinsiliban, Sagay, and Catarman.

The island of Camiguin is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the country. It is referred to the locals as “The Island of Your Imagination” with its volcanoes, waterfalls and springs, beaches, historic ruins, and colorful sunsets. It is famous for its sweet lanzones (“Buahan”), which grows in backyards of local folks in this area. In thanksgiving for its abundant and continuous harvest of the sweet lanzones fruit, the town of Mambajao holds the yearly Lanzones Festival – “Buahanan 2012” –from October 21 to 28, 2012.

Now on its 33rd year, the festival carries the theme “Kinaiyahan Atong Ampinga, Kalaboan Alang sa Tanan (Care for Nature, Everybody’s Success).” Legend says that a beautiful maiden (Diwata) gave the fruit its delicious taste.

For the week-long celebration, there will be street dancing, a search for the festival king and queen, a trade fair featuring the island’s best products, a rondalla and folk dance competition, a draw-and-tell contest, a painting contest, a kiddie’s theater, a sports tournament, a cooking contest, a search for the Mutya sa Buahanan (Miss Camiguin Tourism) 2012, variety and cultural shows, a job fair, and Docu Fest 2012, where government services such as passport processing and issuance of NBI clearance will be available. A lively and colorful showcase of traditional dances (tableau presentation) took place yesterday. The performers portrayed the legend of the lanzones.

We wish the Officials and Residents of the Province of Camiguin headed by Governor Jurdin Jesus M. Romualdo, Vice Governor Leo G. Lasacar, Congressman Pedro P. Romualdo, and the members of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan, namely, Jesus D. Pacuribot, Eugenio G. Peñalosa, Hermogenes B. Lobido, Virgilio F. Lacerna, Periolo T. Banaag, and Jose C.
