Del Castillo safe from removal

Manila, Philippines – The House of Representatives will not in any way pursue the impeachment complaint against Supreme Court (SC) Associate Justice Mariano del Castillo, who is a close friend of impeached Chief Justice Renato C. Corona, House Speaker Feliciano R. Bel monte said yesterday.

Belmonte maintained his stance that such complaint would not prosper this 15th Congress as another high-ranking House leader who did not want to be named disclosed the “natural death” of such case, which stemmed from his alleged plagiarized ruling concerning Filipino comfort women.

“No, we will not,” Belmonte said when asked if the House would still pursue the complaint, which was filed by Isabelita Vinuya and 70 other elderly women who belong to the Malaya Lolas Organization on December 14, 2010 along with 11 lawmakers-complainants.

He stood firm that the House would not transmit the complaint to the Senate as he agreed with Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile that it was a “mere civil damage suit and not an impeachable case.” (Charissa M. Luci)
