Classroom, Teacher Shortages in Public Schools to end in 2013

Manila, Philippines – WITH the proposed P293.2-billion budget of the Department of Education (DepEd), next year would be the first time in decades that the government would be closing the gaps in teachers, classrooms, chairs, and textbooks and other school materials.

The budget includes funds for the hiring of 61,510 new teachers and 3,500 non-teaching personnel; these include more than 7,000 teachers who volunteered for the kindergarten program that was started this year. A total number of 17,939 classrooms would be built, along with 90,461 new water, lavatory, and sanitation facilities. Some 31 million learning materials would be procured and distributed to public schools nationwide.

The DepEd assured that the teacher hiring and classroom construction programmed for 2013 would be sufficient for the requirements of the public school system. The DepEd has already hired 12,661 new teachers and has requested the Department of Budget and Management for the recruitment of an additional 3,000.

As the DepEd’s proposed 2013 budget has increased by 60 percent in the past two years, the government hopes that the shortage of classrooms, teachers, textbooks, and other facilities in public schools will be gone by 2013. However, aside from addressing the resource gaps, the DepEd also needs to focus on improving the quality of education, and Filipino students need to be competitive on the global stage. As President Benigno S. Aquino III has said, education is the key to opening opportunities for the people to extricate themselves from poverty.

We greet the Department of Education headed by Secretary Br. Armin A. Luistro FSC, Undersecretary for Regional Operations Rizalino D. Rivera, Undersecretary for Finance and Administration Francisco M. Varela, Undersecretary for Legal Affairs Alberto T. Muyot, and Undersecretary for Programs and Projects Yolanda S. Quijano in their efforts in closing the gaps in teachers, classrooms, chairs, and textbooks and other school materials. CONGRATULATIONS AND MABUHAY!
