Cebu: Total plastic ban opposed

CEBU CITY, Cebu - Amid the strong advocacy of environmentalists and the recent move by some local government units (LGUs) calling on a total plastic ban, business organizations in Cebu have expressed their resistance on its implementation here, urging instead all local stakeholders to further study the issue.

Plastic ban has already been implemented in Quezon City, Muntinlupa, Marikina, Pasay City, Las Piñas, Pasig, and Manila.

“The implementation on banning the use of plastic would be difficult for lawmakers since a large number of people have been dependent on such industry,“ said Prudencio Gesta, president of Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI).

Instead, he recommended “scaling down“ the use of plastic and to provide the maximum corresponding penalty to those who indiscriminately throw plastic anywhere. (Malou M. Mozo)
