Aga Muhlach and other Bicolanos

Manila, Philippines – POLITICALLY MOTIVATED – It was bound to happen. Right after Aga Muhlach and his wife Charlene Gonzales registered as voters in San Jose, Camarines Sur, certain “insecure” individuals opposed it, claiming the couple do not own a property or have any ties with the province.

The case against Aga is obviously politically motivated as the award-winning actor is running for congressman in the fourth district of CamSur, under the administration’s Liberal Party.

Richard Gomez has earlier warned Aga about the move of political opponents, recalling that in the last elections he was disqualified by the Commission on Elections (Comelec) when he was eyeing a congressional seat in Ormoc. Richard’s wife, Lucy Torres, replaced him and the opponent was buried in a landslide of votes. He’s running next year for mayor of Ormoc, while Congresswoman Lucy is seeking reelection.

GENUINE BICOLANO – Aga’s confident the Comelec will allow him to vote and run in CamSur, saying he’s met all the legal requirements.

Contrary to his detractors’ claim, Aga had been living in San Jose since 2011, bought and rented a property there.

“’Yung buhay ko, ’andon na. I renovated a house in San Jose, pay my taxes and bills there. I have many relatives in the district, Amador, Romero, Abundabar, Borja, Calleja, Go,” says Aga.

Yes, Aga Muhlach is a genuine Bicolano.

*
BICOL ROOTS – Other showbiz personalities who trace their roots to Bicol include, as they come to mind, Eddie Garcia, Bembol Roco, Dina Bonnevie, AJ and Enchong Dee, Boots Anson Roa, Rez Cortez, Maribeth Bichara, Ethel Ramos, Salvi Asis, Isah Red, Butch Roldan, Dindo Balares, Ricky Lo.

And, of course, the Muhlach clan: Amalia Fuentes and daughter Liezl, Alex and son Niño, Aga’s very own father Cheng and sister Arlene.

When Aga took his oath before LP president, Mar Roxas, among those present were the late Naga City Mayor and DILG Secretary Jesse Robredo who urged him to serve his home province.

Aga has so many good plans and projects for the fourth district of CamSur. It’s a pity that opponents who’ve been in power for decades and decades are stopping him through legal machinations.

He wants to serve his province, no more, no less.

The filing for the certificate of candidacy is between Oct. 1 and 5.

SIMPLE LIFE – Aga is visibly energized when talking about his life in his province.

“We do the usual na ginagawa ng tao sa bahay – kwentuhan, kainan, pahinga. We surf online, we jog, we read, we play games.

We go to the grocery, we play basketball with the neighbors. So masayang-masaya kami roon.”

Aga also defends his profession against those who claim that celebrities have no business running for public office.

It’s all because of the people. I just want to pay it forward. To give it back to them,” he added.

CLEAN CAMPAIGN – Is he afraid of all the intrigues that come with being a politician?

Aga laughs and admitted that since he announced his intention to run, some people seem to have made it their life’s work to put him down.

He said, “Parang araw-araw sinisiraan ako. Pero ayos lang.”

Aga promises to run a clean campaign and, should he be elected, to be a true servant of the people.
