Philippines – A former mayor of Valencia City, Bukidnon, was meted six years of imprisonment after he was found guilty by the Sandiganbayan of violating the Anti-Graft and Corrupt Practices Act (RA 3019).

Aside from six years of imprisonment, former Mayor Jose M. Galario Jr. of Valencia City, Bukidon, was disqualified from holding public office based on the decision opened by Associate Justice Rafael Lagos of the Sandiganbayan First Division with concurrence of Associate Justice Efren de la Cruz, First Division chairperson, and Associate Justice Rodolfo A. Ponferrada.

The case against Galario stemmed from the complaint of one Ms. Ruth P. Piano, whom he replaced as the Valencia City budget officer when he assumed as city mayor on July 2, 2001.

The prosecution said Ms. Piano has been the budget officer of Valencia City since 1982 but for still unknown reason she was replaced by the accused, and one Bartolome took over her functions as city budget officer. (Rolly Carandang)
