Taekwondo hosting

Manila, Philippines – The Philippines will bid for the hosting of 2015 taekwondo qualifier for the 2016 Brazil Olympics.

This was bared by Philippine Taekwondo Association secretary-general Noli Gabriel yesterday, adding Thailand is also eyeing the opportunity.

“Malamang i-award sa atin,“ said Gabriel, a doctor by profession.

Gabriel said the association needs P10 million to host the event which the country hosted once prior to the 2000 Sydney Olympics.

It was the year taekwondo, a Korean invented martial arts, became a regular event in the Olympics after it was played as a demonstration sport in 1992 in Barcelona and 1996 in Atlanta.

“We sent four jins in Sydney,“ said Gabriel referring to Roberto Cruz, Donald Geisler, Jasmine Stratchan and Eva Dethan.

“We’ll do everything and work hard to host the 2015 qualifying. We have the facilities to host the event,“ stressed Gabriel.

Taekwondo has no entry in the 2012 30th Summer Olympics London hosted for the third time since 1908 and 1948. (Clyde Mariano)
