Speaker hopeful on Cha-cha

Manila, Philippines – House Speaker Feliciano “Sonny“ R. Belmonte Jr. remains hopeful that the initiative amending the restrictive economic provisions of the 1987 Constitution would push through in the 15th Congress.

Belmonte said since President Benigno S. Aquino III did not outrightly reject the House and Senate Charter change (Cha-cha) proposal, “I am hopeful that Charter change can still be approved this Congress to further boost the country’s economy.“

“We need more investors to come in and do business with us. We really need to create the friendliest environment for them (investors),“ he stressed.

Belmonte said the Chief Executive’s move directing the economic and legal clusters of his Cabinet was itself a sign that Cha-cha is not yet dead this 15th Congress.

“If Cha-cha has no chance, the President would not order his Cabinet to study the potential gains and profits of the constitutional amendments which are sustainable to the needs of the people,“ Belmonte said. (Charissa M. Luci)
