Manila, Philippines – Reigning titlist San Beda guns for a share of the lead in the first-round elimination standings when it tackles Letran today in the 88th NCAA basketball tournament at The Arena in San Juan.

The match is set at 6 p.m. after Mapua and Arellano University, both toting 3-5 marks, clash at 4 p.m.

The Red Lions are hoping to bounce back from a heartbreaking 71-80 loss to bitter rival San Sebastian Stags Thursday night. The defeat put them at solo second with a 6-2 card, while San Sebastian improved to 7-2 in tie with Jose Rizal University at the helm.

In that game, Ronald Pascual erupted for 28 points while last season’s Most Valuable Player Calvin Abueva had a monster game of 21 points, 21 rebounds and nine assists.

Abueva, who joined the PBA Rookie Draft, currently leads the scoring, rebounding and assist departments after averaging 20.4 points, 17.3 rebounds and 6.5 assists a game.

San Beda coach Ronnie Magsanoc does not want to dwell too much on the stinging defeat and instead, sets his sights on a dangerous Letran crew.
