Assessing public school computerization program

MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Education (DepEd), in cooperation with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), is conducting an assessment of its on-going information and communications technology for education (ICT4E) initiatives from July to September, 2012. With the Foundation for Information Technology Education and Development (FITED) as the overall coordinator for the project, team members are to visit DepEd offices, all elementary and secondary schools, and Alternative Learning System (ALS) centers with ICT projects.

Also included in the assessment initiatives is the DepEd Computerization Program (DCP) which deploys computer packages to public elementary and high schools nationwide to support the teaching and learning process. To date, the program has covered 51 percent of elementary schools and 88 percent of high schools as of the beginning of school year 2011-2012.

The results of the assessment, it is hoped, will improve the design and implementation of the DepEd Computerization Program and the DepEd Internet Connectivity Program (DCP/DCIP);better integrate ICT in the K-to-12 curriculum;create and implement ICT training programs for teachers;and develop relevant policies and guidelines for schools to effectively use ICT in teaching and learning process.

The ICT plays a very important role in administrative functions as well as in the teaching and learning process. The DepEd enjoins all concerned to support the project and extend every possible assistance to expedite the completion of the activities.

We greet the Department of Education headed by its Secretary Bro. Armin A. Luistro FSC;the United States Agency for International Development-Philippines headed by its Mission Director Gloria D. Steele and Deputy Mission Director Reed J. Aeschliman;and the Assessment Coordinators headed by Team Leader Patricia B. Arinto and DepEd Technical Service Director Rogelio Vicente Juan O. Morales, on the occasion of its assessment of information and communications technology for education. CONGRATULATIONS AND MABUHAY!
