Manila, Philippines – A veteran lawmaker has proposed the extension of permanent fare discounts to 30 million students to make education affordable and keep them in school.
Aurora Rep. Juan Edgardo Angara said all students, including those enrolled in vocational and technical courses, should be entitled to the 20 percent discount on fare even during weekends, semestral breaks, and vacations.
Angara filed House Bill (HB) No. 90 that will institutionalize the grant of a fare discount privilege to all students on all transport facilities.
“This is one effective way of keeping our students in school, especially those who are compelled to stop schooling because of financial woes and economic difficulty,“ Angara said.
Under HB 90, students will be entitled to the 20 percent fare discount on regular fares on land, sea, and air transport upon presentation of their school identification cards or other evidence of enrolment such as registration forms.
Angara, chairman of the House Committee on Higher Education, urged operators of all public utility vehicles (PUV), airline and sea line operators, and mass rail transit administrators to be “participants“ to this “nation-building efforts“ by not opposing the proposed measure.
“We are all stakeholders in our country’s future. Having said that, we might as well make sure that its future shapers and movers are adequately trained and educated as early as now,“ Angara, a staunch advocate of education, pointed out.
