Manila, Philippines – The Loyola Meralco Sparks defeated Myanmar side Kanbawza, 3-1, Thursday in the first leg of their RHB Singapore Cup quarterfinals at the Jalan Besar Stadium in Singapore.
Brothers Phil and James Younghusband and Mark Hartmann scored for the Sparks to gain the upper hand in their two-leg series with the Yangon-based club.
Loyola, which finished third in the UFL first division after fizzling late in the season, needs at least a loss by not more than one goal to secure a place in the semifinals where the winner will face either local side Tampines Rovers or Japan’s Albriex Niigata.
The second leg will be held tomorrow at the same venue.
Phil, who topped the UFL season with 23 goals, put the Sparks on the board by scoring in the 15th minute before Hartmann made it 2-0 by booting one in the 66th minute. (Jonas Terrado)
