Manila, Philippines – League leaders San Beda and Perpetual Help seek to jump out of a four-way logjam when they tackle separate foes today in the 88th NCAA basketball tournament at The Arena in San Juan.
The defending champion Red Lions welcome Ola Adeogun in their 4 p.m. meeting with Emilio Aguinaldo College Generals, while the Altas gun for a second straight win against the College of St. Benilde Blazers at 6 p.m.
Both San Beda and Perpetual are sporting 3-1 marks with San Sebastian and Jose Rizal University at the helm.
Adeogun is coming out of a four-game suspension after the Nigerian center and his teammates got involved in a fight with San Sebastian volleyball coach Roger Gorayeb last December.
With the cast comple, San Beda mentor Ronnie Magsanoc expects his squad to come out stronger, although remains wary of the Generals, who sport a 1-3 record at the cellar.
“It’s a very young team. Everybody is trying to strengthen the bond so that when the challenges come along, we are ready. We’ll try to go full force, stick our head above water and rely on our players,“ said Magsanoc in their 59-53 win over St.
Benilde last Monday.
Adeogun expects to provide muscle and firepower for the Red Lions with his towering 6-foot-8 frame, but will match up with the Generals’ 6-foot-7 Cameroonian center Noube Happi.
Perpetual, meanwhile, hopes to extend its impressive 88-87 win over San Beda last week with Jet Vidal and Earl Thompson leading their campaign following previous double-digit performances.
But they will be up against St. Benilde’s (2-3) own duo of Carlo Lastimosa and Joel Tolentino. (Kristel Satumbaga)
