
Manila, Philippines – WBO super bantamweight champion Nonito Donaire scored a unanimous decision over the much taller Jeffrey Mathebula today to unify the WBO super bantamweight belt and the IBF belt after a 12-round bout held at the Home Depot Center in Carson City, California today.
Donaire knocked down Mathebula in the fourth round with a dangerous left hand, the first time that Mathebula has reportedly been knocked down.
In the 11th round, Donaire seemed to have hurt Mathebula with a right hand. It was later on reported that the South African suffered a cracked tooth which caused him to bleed from the mouth for the last two rounds.
The judges scored it as follows: Deon Dwarte (119-108), Jonathan Davis (117-110) and Steve Morrow (118-109) all for Donaire.
Donaire thus improves to 29-1 with 18 knockouts while Mathebula is now 26-4-2 with 14 KOs.
