Manila, Philippines – Pacesetter Jose Rizal University tries to protect its flawless record while Lyceum eyes to extend its winning streak to three games when they take on separate foes today in the 88th NCAA basketball tournament at The Arena in San Juan.
The Heavy Bombers gun for their fourth straight victory in as many outings when they clash with last season’s bridesmaid San Sebastian Stags at 6 p.m. The Pi
rates (2-3), for their part, square off with the Arellano Chiefs (1-3) at 4 p.m.
Pitted as one of the title contenders this season, JRU seeks to keep a tight grip on its solo lead and slowly pull away from the rest of the squad. Its closest pursuer is Perpetual Help, which improved to a 3-1 record following an impressive 88-87 overtime win against defending champion San Beda Thursday night.
JRU coach Vergel Meneses will pin his hopes on the leadership of Nat Matute, who has been a consistent scorer for the crew. In their 90-79 win over Emilio Aguinaldo College last week, Matute set the court ablaze with 30 points on a 7-of-10 three-point shooting.
Meneses said every game is a learning process, and that they continue to improve their system game after game.
“Pag may nakikita kaming error, tina-try naming ayusin yon. Like against EAC, we made passing errors in the fourth quarter. We can’t afford to do that,” Meneses said.
Meneses expected a tough road ahead against the Stags, who are at 2-1 after back-to-back wins against College of St. Benilde (95-93) and Perpetual Help (80-65) a week back. (Kristel Satumbaga)
