Manila, Philippines – PURSUANT to Section 7 of Presidential Decree No. 491 (Nutrition Act of the Philip pines) dated June 25, 1974, the month of July is celebrated as National Nutrition Month throughout the country to create “greater awareness among our people on the importance of nutrition.“
The National Nutrition Council (NNC) annually comes up with a theme to draw public attention and inspire action on a particular nutrition-related issue. With the theme “Pagkain ng Gulay Ugaliin, Araw-araw Itong Ihain,“ this year’s National Nutrition Month celebration urges Filipinos to increase consumption of vegetables to address micronutrient deficiencies.
The NNC recently conducted a nationwide recipe development contest designed to develop low-cost, easy-to-prepare, and nutritious vegetable dishes. The winning recipes will be compiled into a recipe book that will be printed for distribution to beneficiaries of the Conditional Cash Transfer program (“Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program“) administered by the Department of Social Welfare and Development. The Council also met with Presidents of the Urban Poor Associations at the Regional Health Training Center in Zamboanga City with the intent of partnering with other sectors in the promotion of good nutrition was discussed.
Various activities have been lined up throughout the country to mark the month-long celebration, including planting of vegetables in several schools, day care centers, communities, hospitals, parks, and homes; conduct of seminars for stakeholders; an “Advocacy Run“ organized by the Association of Nutrition Action Officers (ANAO) of NCR to be participated in by about 5,000 runners from the 17 towns and cities of Metro Manila.
We greet the National Nutrition Council Governing Board led by Chairman Department of Health Secretary Enrique T. Ona, Vice Chairmen Department of Agriculture Secretary Proceso J. Alcala and Department of Interior and Local Government Secretary Jesse M. Robredo, Executive Director Department of Health Assistant Secretary Maria Bernardita T. Flores and Deputy Executive Director Carolina Bautista-Batallones, other Officers and Members on the occasion of National Nutrition Month.
