Senior golfest kicks off today

Manila, Philippines – Former champions Rolly Viray and Francis Gaston head a starstudded field teeing off today in search for the NGAP-Globe Business Philippine Senior Amateur championship at the tight Camp Aguinaldo layout.

Viray and Gaston, who also held the RP Am title at one time in their respective careers, are just two of the fancied bets in the 54-hole event where World Amateur veteran Dave Hernandez also looms as a solid pick.

The nucleus of Canlubang and Luisita, which have had several memorable PAL Interclub battles, make up practically the entire roster of the centrepiece event, with Minying Maravilla and Rudy Amata of Luisita also expected to figure prominently.

Sugar Barons Mari Hechanova and the burly Tony Olives and Lino Magpantay, who saw action for both teams in the last three years, are also entered even as former President Fidel V. Ramos sees action in the Super Senior category and will actually open the event.

The venue, a military-owned layout, will provide a lot of challenge for the talented field because of its bending fairways and small greens.

“I think something like two-over (par) a day for six-over (for 54 holes) would be enough to win it,” Iggy Clavecilla said before pulling out because of commitments with the Philippine Sports Commission.

The event is being backed by Pancake House, Titleist and Golf Depot.
