Manila, Philippines – Rey Guevarra has been finally given the green light to fly!
After riding a large part of his career on the bench and in the shadows of Rabeh Al Hussaini and Noy Baclao when he was still with Air21 and Petron, the 2010 third-round draftee finally showed what he is capable of — and how.
Guevarra got his big break last Friday against Alaska and he certainly did not disappoint coach Bo Perasol. In fact, the former Smart Gilas candidate and Letran star contributed 15 points to help the Powerade Tigers register their first victory.
Included in those 15 points was the emphatic dunk he made over Jason Forte. Guevarra is no stranger when it comes to throwing it down, being a many time slam dunk champion.
Last night, Guevarra proved that his performance against Alaska was no fluke.
Guevarra once again made a key contribution by chipping in 11 points to help the Tigers bring down an undermanned TnT squad, including another highlight reel during a fastbreak play.
This time, it came from a good feed from main star Gary David where Guevarra dunked the ball once again with flare which energized the Tigers even more.
Guevarra actually had his moments when he was still with Petron but it was only with Powerade where the former Letran Knight finally got in sync and the respect he so truly deserves.
Rey was practically forgotten and only made the headlines as part of trades in the last months. But now all that has changed.
Guevarra’s star has finally shone and now each time he takes the floor, PBA fans will be eagerly awaiting what highlight reel he will be showing off.
Yes folks, Guevarra has finally broken his jinx and now all teams are taking notice — yes including his past teams. (Brian Yalung)
