Manila, Philippines – MESTIZAS, BROWN BEAUTIES – What’s the big deal about the Bayo ad praising ladies of mixed blood?

Mestizas are truly beautiful. No doubt about that. But then the ad didn’t say or even infer that pure blooded Pinays are not.

So why are narrow-minded people protesting the Bayo ad?

There are so many mestizas who made names abroad – beauty queens, supermodels, actresses.

Think Margie Moran, Mayumi Cabrera, Monique Wilson.

But so did brown beauties like Gemma Cruz, Tetchie Agbayani, Gloria Diaz, Lea Salonga.

FROM WAY BACK – Look, mixed-blood beauties have been with us from way, way back.

Gloria Romero, Carmen Rosales, Rosa del Rosario, Nida Blanca, Susan Roces, Amalia Fuentes – movie queens all – are mestizas.

So are Delia Razon, Anita Linda, Lilia Dizon.

Among actors, Eddie Mesa, Ronaldo Valdez, Eddie Garcia, Ric Rodrigo, Mario Montenegro, Phillip Salvador, German Moreno, Eddie Gutierrez have foreign blood.

LIKE, UNLIKE – Like Lito Lapid, Isko Moreno was only a high school graduate when he started in showbiz.

But then unlike Senator Lapid, Manila Vice Mayor Moreno continued his education. He finished college and even went to Harvard (short course) on a scholarship.

Before going to the Senate, Lito served as Porac mayor and Pampanga governor. He confesses having difficulty in speaking English.

Which can’t be said of Isko, conversant in both Pilipino and English. In time, Isko is likely to become Manila mayor. But not just yet. He is Joseph Estrada’s running mate next year. As you very well know, Erap is running for mayor of Manila.
