CALAMBA CITY, Laguna - Local officials and other sectors of the society celebrated yesterday with various activities the 151st birthday of Philippine national hero Dr. Jose P. Rizal.
The celebration started with a wreath-laying at the largest Rizal monument in the world at the city plaza at around 7 a.m.
The event was led by National Historical Commission chair Maria Serena Diokno and Former Las Pinas Congresswoman Cynthia Villar along with City Mayor Joaquin Chipeco, City Vice Mayor Severino Lajara, Congressman Justin Chipeco, Sangguniang Panglungsod members, relatives of Rizal and members of the Knights of Rizal.
Other wreath-laying activities were also done in other sites of this city where the statues of Rizal are located, such as in Calamba City Collge, Jose Rizal Memorial School, and in Barangay Sampalukan.The last floral offering was at the statue of Batang Rizal called “Pepe“ inside the Rizal Shrine.
In her speech, Diokno said that the Filipinos’ plight became known to Spain and other European countries when Rizal teamed up with Marcelo H. Del Pilar and other Filipino writers in the early 1890′s and published the Propaganda which described the condition of the Filipino people under the Spaniards.
For her part, Mrs. Villar said that Rizal’s writings, particularly El Filibusterismo and Noli Me Tangere, had contributed a lot to the nationalistic activities of other heroes during Rizal’s days. (Ferdinand Castro)
