Jessica hopes to sing ‘Lupang Hinirang’ in next Pacquiao fights

Manila, Philippines – WHILE some netizens feel bad that Jessica Sanchez sang the American national anthem instead of the Philippine national anthem during the Manny Pacquiao-Timothy Bradley bout, the “American Idol” runner-up said she is hoping she could also sing “Lupang Hinirang” in Pacquiao’s future fights.

In an interview with ABS-CBN News before the boxing match on Saturday (Sunday in Manila), Sanchez said she would love to learn to speak Tagalog soon.

“[I want to sing ‘Lupang Hinirang] most definitely. I don’t speak any Tagalog but I’ve sang in Tagalog before so maybe in the future,” she said.

Sanchez even said she would ask her mom to teach her to speak Filipino since she does not speak any other language besides English.

“We’ll see what happens. I don’t speak anything. I need to learn,” she said.

According to the 16-year-old singer, she feels really honored to be invited by Pacquiao to sing in his fight. She is also glad to have met the Filipino boxing superstar just before the match began.

“It was amazing. I can’t even believe I’m here right now. It was an honor to meet him and Freddie (Roach). I can’t wait to sing,” she said.

The San Diego-based singer also revelead that she was praying for Pacquiao to win.

Meanwhile, Sanchez admitted that as early as now, she is already looking forward to the “Idol” tour.

“It’s gonna be amazing. There’s gonna some great songs. It’s gonna be a whole big production show and it starts July 6 in Detroit. We’ll go to 42 cities,” she said.

Sanchez also said there’s nothing more exciting than performing before her Filipino fans. (ABS-CBN News Online)

why would she sing a national anthem of a country she is not from, or in a language she does not speak? expecting her to sing the filipino national anthem is like expecting President Aquino to sing the Chinese national anthem because of his half-Chinese heritage. Jessica is American and it is more appropriate that she sing the United States national anthem
