Erap doubts survey on candidacy

Manila, Philippines – Former President Joseph “Erap” Estrada has expressed doubt over the lat- est survey conducted by Social Weather Stations (SWS) which revealed that if the elections were held today he would likely beat incumbent Manila Mayor Alfredo Lim by a small margin.

Estrada said SWS fell short in figures when it revealed that he would likely beat incumbent Manila Mayor Alfredo Lim by 53 against 45 percent.

“53 percent only? Why couldn’t they raise it higher?” Estrada asked.”They should raise it because I can feel it,” he added, referring to his victory in the mayoral race in Manila this coming May polls.

Earlier, the private pollster reported Estrada is likely to beat Lim in a one-on-one race in a survey conducted from May 5 to 8.

The survey had a margin of error of +/3 percent on a city-wide basis, using face-to-face interviews with 1,200 adult respondents
across six congressional districts in Manila.

SWS added that Estrada is also heavily favored to win with his running mate re-electionist ViceMayor Isko Moreno 66 per cent over the 30 per cent of Lim and his vice-mayoral candidate.

SWS clarified it conducted the survey shortly before Estrada formally announced his intention to run for mayor of Manila, the seat of the national government.

On May 9, Estrada moved to the new house he had purchased in Santa Mesa district in Manila from neighboring San Juan City in Metro Manila where he started his political career as mayor for several terms.

His transfer was in compliance with a legal requirement for candidates running for local positions during the election in this case the May 2013 polls to establish a one-year residency.

The day after his transfer, Estrada also registered before the Commission on Elections as a voter of Manila to comply with another legal requirement that he must be a registered voter in the city for at least six months.

Estrada vowed to campaign on the platform of massive urban renewal to transform Manila, saying the city has been left behind by neighbors in Metro Manila especially Quezon City and Makati City.
