‘Butete-like’ fish kills 1

By MARS W. MOSQUEDA JR.

Philippines – A fish related to the poisonous puffer (“butete“) family killed one person and downed four others in Barangay Cansaloay, Oslob, Cebu.

The fatality, identified as Epitacio Perolino, 37; his wife, Angelita, and three other neighbors ate orbicular batfish boiled in vinegar and spices.

However, the fish had toxins.

Just 10 minutes after eating the fish, the victims started vomiting and feeling stomach pains.

They were taken to the hospital.

Perolino, however, was declared dead on arrival while the four others were still being observed.

Allan Poquita, assistant regional director of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources 7, said orbicular batfish has tetrodo toxin in its toxin bag that can poison humans.

He said that once an orbicular batfish is in rigor mortis stage, its toxin will be released from the toxin bag and mixes with flesh and organs.
