Azkals take on Indonesia XI

Manila, Philippines – The Philippines looks to carry the momentum of its scoreless draw with Malaysia on Friday when it battles another Southeast Asian powerhouse in Indonesia in tonight’s friendly match at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.

Playing the second of the two week, three-match schedule, the Azkals try to put a better result in front of their fans this time when they meet the Indonesians at 7 p.m.

It will be the first time that the two teams will clash on the pitch since Indonesia won 2-0 on aggregate in the semifinals of the 2010 AFF Suzuki Cup held in
Jakarta.

In that affair, Indonesia won the two legs by similar 1-0 scores with Cristian Gonzales, a naturalized player from Uruguay, making two spectacular goals to end the Filipinos’ improbable run in the tourney. Indonesia eventually lost to Malaysia in the finals.

This time, however, Gonzales nor majority of the players on that squad will play for Indonesia tonight.

Left from the 2010 team are charismatic Irfan Bachdim, whose looks have made him a fan favorite, and the wily Oktovianus Maniani. (Jonas Terrado)
