The title bids of Rubilen Amit and Iris Ranola came to an end Tuesday night when they bowed in the Round-of-32 of the WPA Women’s World 9-Ball Championship in Shenyang, China.
After consecutive hill-hill victories, Amit suffered a 9-2 loss to Japanese Chichiro Kawahara while Ranola absorbed a 9-6 defeat to former world champion Allison Fisher.
The early elimination of the two Filipina bets completed their rollercoaster campaigns in the week-long event.
Amit, the 2009 World 10-Ball champion, endured similar 7-6 wins in group stage but the inconsistency finally caught up on her as Kawahara cruised to a sizzling
start and never looked back.
On the other hand, Ranola had to go through the loser’s bracket to secure a place in the Roundof-32 but was outclassed by the more experienced Fisher.
Meanwhile, the men’s edition of the World 9-Ball Championship unfolds tomorrow in Qatar.
A chunk of Filipinos are expected to compete in the week-long tourney, namely 2011 WPA Player of the Year Dennis Orcollo, Django Bustamante and Ronnie Alcano.
Alcano was runner-up in last year’s event held in Fujairah, UAE, bowing to current World No. 1 Yukio Akagariyama, 1311, in the finals. (Jonas Terrado)
