Manila, Philippines – Last year’s runner-up Ronnie Alcano and Dennis Orcollo defeated separate rivals on Sunday night to open their redemption bids in the World 9-Ball Championship at the Al Saad Sports Club in Doha, Qatar.
Alcano opened his bid to win a record third world title with a 9-3 victory over Singapore’s Toh Lian Han while Orcollo posted a 9-6 win over Ali Saeed Alsuwaidi of United Arab Emirates to extend the Filipinos’ sizzling start in the week-long event.
The two are hoping to find their mark this time after falling short in last year’s tourney.
Alcano’s attempt of winning a third world title was shattered in the finals when he lost to eventual champion and current World No. 1 Yukio Akagariyama of Japan, 13-11, while Orcollo bowed to the former, 11-9, in the semis. (Jonas Terrado)
