Bill moving barangay polls OK’d

Manila, Philippines – The consolidated measure resetting the October 2013 barangay elections to the last Monday of October 2015 has been approved by the House Committee on Local Government.

Negros Oriental Rep. George Arnaiz, committee chairman, said the bill, which in effect extends the term of barangay officials to five years, was unanimously approved by the members of his panel on Wednesday afternoon before Congress went into sine die adjournment.

The Visayan lawmaker said the bill would be “transmitted to the plenary when the Congress opens its sessions next month.”

Iloilo Rep. Jerry Treñas, one of the principal authors of the bill, is counting on the measure to be passed this 15th Congress, saying that it would save the government tens of millions of pesos in scarce public funds which could be used to funds programs in education, infrastructure development and other vital development programs.
