Shell Youth active chess up

Manila, Philippines – The search for future masters goes on.

The Shell National Youth Active Chess Championships celebrates its 20th anniversary by launching another nationwide competition for the sport’s future stars who could hopefully follow the footsteps of Grandmasters Nelson Mariano II, Mark Paragua and Wesley So, among others.

“Over the past 20 years we have produced nine grandmasters and about as many international masters and FIDE Masters, so that’s an average of one master a year,“ noted Pilipinas Shell Petroleum Corp. Media Relations Manager Toby Nebrida in yesterday’s PSA Forum at the Shakey’s UN Ave. “We’re very proud about that fact at tuloy pa rin ang program,“ added Nebrida.

Also gracing the public service program backed by Shakey’s, Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp., and Smart was Pilipinas Shell Social Investment Manager Jackie Ampil who said participants and followers can only expect better competitions and stronger products in the coming tournaments.

“Over the next five years, we hope to produce more talents by holding stronger competitions and games while continuing to go out to the grassroots and including more schools, chess clubs and municipal and provincial government offices,“ said Ampil.

Two of the standouts in last year’s event were Gerald Decena and Jared Samanquile who are currently making waves abroad.

“We’re very proud to continue our legacy that started in 1992,“ said Ampil.

For this year, lined up is a fiveleg elimination round in as many key cities all over the country for juniors and kiddies, both for boys and girls. The juniors are for players aged 20-and-under and the kiddies 14-and-under.

The kick-off leg is set on June 22-23 at the SM Megamall in Mandaluyong, followed by Tuguegarao on July 14-15, Batangas July 28-29, Davao August 11-12 and then Cebu on August 25-26.

To division finishers gain berths to the national finals set Sept. 2223 also at SM Megamall.
