Manila, Philippines – Buoyed by victories in their semifinal openers, fancied teams Ateneo and University of Santo Tomas try to forge a title showdown when they battle separate foes today at the resumption of the best-of-three series in the ninth Shakey’s V-League presented by Smart.
The defending champion Lady Eagles collide with the Perpetual Help Lady Altas in the 2 p.m. curtain-raiser at The Arena in San Juan, while the multi-titled Tigresses tackle the San Sebastian spikers at 4 p.m.
Another win for both Ateneo and UST would arrange their first best-of-three finals meeting in the league, with the Lady Eagles seeking to retain their crown and the Tigresses eyeing for their seventh title.
Ateneo can pull off another straight-set win, although coach Roger Gorayeb and his stalwarts are averting another nail-biting affair following a 31-29, 25-20, 25-19 win over Perpetual last Sunday.
Expected to lead the Lady Eagles anew are Alyssa Valdez and Thai import Phee Nok Kesinee, who combined for 29 hits in their first semis match, as well as Fille Cainglet and Dzi Gervacio.
Ateneo’s solid lineup does not intimidate Perpetual as they are
slated to parade Sandra Delos Santos, Thai guest player Kunbang Pornpimol and Norie Diaz, who conspired for 38 points in a losing attempt.
Also boasting of a talent-laden crew was UST, whose five players finished in double figures in their 25-11, 25-17, 23-25, 21-25, 15-8 triumph over SSC in Game 1.
The Tigresses dominated all departments, posting 58 points out of 159 attempts on attacks while finishing with 16 blocks and eight aces. SSC, however had 55-of-155 on attacks, five blocks and four aces. (Kristel Satumbaga)
