Manila, Philippines – The season-ending PBA Governors Cup gets underway this Sunday and PBA Commissioner Angelico “Chito” Salud believes that this will be another test to gauge the success that the league has been enjoying from the previous two conferences.
“The 3rd conference will be another opportunity to gauge the league’s progress in terms of player and team connection to the fans. To attract new casual fans, that is our challenge to our players. We have seen this in the first two conferences but we need a younger base of fans to build the solid following that the PBA is now enjoying. Our games must continue to be attractive and exciting. Sports, after all is all about excitement” relayed Atty. Salud via text message.
Indeed after two pulsating conferences, the PBA Governors’ Cup will be the icing on the cake.
Despite controversies here and there, the PBA has somehow managed to lure back the fans. This breakthrough was witnessed firsthand during the past PBA finals.
With record-breaking attendance figures to show, there is no question on why the good commissioner is upbeat on where the PBA is now and looking to end the season with a bang with the PBA Governors Cup.
The games on Sunday, May 20, pit the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters against the Alaska Aces. That game will see the debut of new head coach Luigi Trillo as well as new recruit Gabby Espinas. Espinas was acquired in exchange for JayR Reyes who is now with the Meralco Bolt’s.
The Aces will parade the hardworking balik-import Jason Forte while Rain or Shine will have Jamelle Cornley.
In the second game, two teams that figured in a much criticized trade take the floor at 6:30 p.m. Petron has beefed up its roster with the acquisition of Marcio Lassiter as well as the return of the Junkyard Dawg, Dorian Pena.
For the Tigers, Rabeh Al-Hussaini, Rey Guevarra, Jondan Salvador (acquired from Barako in a trade for Doug Kramer) and vet Lordy Tugade will make their respective debuts as well.
Powerade will be parading NBA veteran Rashad McCants to help out in their campaign while the Boosters will be having Eddie Basden as their import. (Brian Yalung)
