Manila, Philippines – The National People’s Coalition (NPC), one of the biggest political parties in the country, strongly supports the government’s decision to call international attention on the Scarborough or Panatag Shoal controversy with the Chinese government.
The boost to the Aquino government’s efforts to “internationalize“ the issue was thrown by the NPC following a statement issued by its spokesman Valenzuela City Rep. Rex T. Gatchalian.
In the statement, Gatchalian said the NPC believes that President Benigno S. Aquino III made the proper move to remind China “that we are living in a period of time when conflicts and disagreements between sovereign nations are resolved by applicable international laws and doctrines.” The House opposition headed by Minority Leader Quezon Rep.
Danilo E. Suarez appeared to be supportive of the Aquino government’s decision to bring the issue to the International Tribunal on the Law of the Sea (ITLOS), a move that the Chinese government could choose to ignore. (Ben R. Rosario)
