5 injured in cruise ship fire

MANILA, Philippines — Five passengers on board a luxury cruise ship were wounded when a fire disabled the ship’s engines at a spot between Palawan and Panay islands in west Philippines, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) said Saturday.

The Philippine National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Center said in a report that the Coast Guard District-Palawan received a telephone call on Saturday morning, informing that Azamara Quest caught fire at a place 75 nautical miles south off the Tubbataha Reef, Palawan.

Rescue operations and fire fighting efforts are still on-going as of 1 p.m. Saturday.

A local television station said one of the injured was in ” unstable” condition, while the remainders sustained minor injuries. The ship is to evacuate the injured passengers.

The cruise ship came from Singapore and was bound for Mumbai, India. Some 590 passengers, mostly Americans and Europeans, and 411 crew were on board the ship. (Xinhua)
