At least three relatively strong earthquakes shook parts of Eastern Samar shortly after yesterday noon, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs). At 12:26 p.m. Wednesday, a 4.3-magnitude earthquake was recorded that originated 13 kilometers (km) northeast of Borongan, Eastern Samar.
Phivolcs said Intensity 4 was felt in Borongan City, Eastern Samar and Intensity 3 in San Policarpio and Oras in Eastern Samar, and Tacloban City. It was followed by a 5.0-magnitude tremor at 12:30 p.m. yesterday with its epicenter located 38 km northeast of Borongan, Eastern Samar.
Intensity 5 was felt in Borongan in Eastern Samar, and Tacloban City, and Intensity 4 in San Policarpio and Mercedes in Eastern Samar, and Pastrana in Leyte.
Phivolcs science research specialist Erlinton Olavere said an earthquake that is felt at Intensity 5 is considered strong and felt by most people. Shortly after, a 4.6-magnitude tremor was recorded at 12:39 p.m. Wednesday, which originated 13 km northeast of Borongan, Eastern Samar. Intensity 5 was felt in Borongan, Eastern Samar; Intensity 4 in Tacloban City and Pastrana in Leyte and Mercedes, Eastern Samar; and Intensity 3 in San Policarpo, Eastern Samar. (Ellalyn B. de Vera)
