Lito Atienza as host… actor

Manila, Philippines – HOST-ACTOR – Didn’t realize that the GMA morning drama “Maynila” marks its 13th year in 2012. That is not until executive producer Lani Atienza and PR Eric Cham invited this columnist to a press lunch to announce “Maynila’s” coming episodes.

Nice meeting its host (and actor) for the nth time, no other than Lito Atienza, former Manila mayor and DENR secretary, garbed in his signature floral polo. Mayor Atienza is host of “Maynila” from day one and eventually actor — every now and then.

“Maynila,” one of the very few GMA blocktimers, has featured young stars coming not only from the Kapuso channel but also those from ABS-CBN and TV5. It’ll continue showcasing the talents of young stars in future episodes.

WHAT MATTERS MOST – For example, today’s episode, “Heart Spikes,” topbills the promising Bea Binene and Derrick Monasterio, co-starring with Cynthia Yapchingco and yes, Lito Atienza.

Bea plays an ugly duckling who turns into a beautiful swan. But the transformation causes her to lose perspective on what really matters most in life. She becomes swellheaded.

Bea later realizes her fault… that love is more important than anything else. She renews her relationship with her BF (Derrick), sister (Cynthia), and father (Lito).

LESSON – Every episode of “Maynila” carries a lesson, injecting Filipino values. It also promotes the City of Manila, its friendly people and rich history and scenic places.

Mayor Atienza won’t have it any other way. He champions family values and supports youth action in public life.

“Maynila” airs every Saturday on GMA, 9:30 in the morning.

‘PANADEROS’ – Next Saturday’s episode is “Labsyu Pards,” where Mayor Atienza and Kean Cipriano play panaderos… in uniform yet.

SUPPORTING ERAP – Asked if he’s making a political comeback next year, Mayor Atienza’s non-committal. But should Pres. Joseph Estrada run for mayor of Manila, “I’ll support him.”

Erap is a true blue Manileño, born in Tondo.

There are reports that Erap wants Lito to be his running mate? He smiled, “Puro speculations pa lang.”
