Grade 1, first year listing

Manila, Philippines – Thousands of Grade 1 pupils and first-year high school students are expected to enroll in the Department of Education’s (DepEd) Expanded Early Registration Day for school year 2012-2013 today in all public elementary and secondary schools nationwide.

Education Secretary Armin Luistro stressed the importance of participating in the registration, saying it would greatly help the DepEd in addressing shortages in the basic education system.

“The information that can be generated from the early registration will be an important input in the planning that we will be conducting immediately after so that we can address potential resource needs in time for the opening of classes in June,” Luistro said.

DepEd expanded the target of early registration to include out-of school children and youths and learners with disability. Last year, the registration covered only kindergarten that jumpstarted the K to 12 basic education reform program as well as Grade 1 pupils and first year high school students.

Luistro also urged community and education stakeholders to help the DepEd in addressing education resource shortage and to prepare for the opening of classes in June.

DepEd has set aside a whole month – from February 6 to March 6 – for school officials, teachers, parents, and other community stakeholders “to plan ways of addressing education resource gaps and implementing different intervention programs to ensure that all children are in school by the opening of classes.” (Ina Hernando Malipot)
