The father of NBA superstar Kobe Bryant will coach the expansion Bangkok Cobras for the third season of the AirAsia ASEAN Basketball League.
Joe “Jellybean” Bryant will make his ABL coaching debut on Saturday when the Cobras take on the AirAsia Philippine Patriots at the San Juan gym.
The hiring of Bryant came after mentoring the WNBA’s Los Angeles Sparks on an interim basis. He was appointed after the firing of Jennifer Gillom but his contract was not renewed and was recently replaced by Carol Ross.
Bryant played nine NBA seasons for the Philadelphia 76ers, San Diego Clippers and Houston Rockets from 1975-1983 before spending most of his pro career in Italy. Aside from coaching the Sparks twice, he also mentored teams in the ABA and Japan.
It turns out, Bryant won’t the only ex-NBA player that will coach in Thailand.
Former New York Knicks and New Jersey Nets star Michael Ray Richardson was hired last summer to mentor the reigning champion Chang Thailand Slammers.
Richardson reportedly will have Filipino players Jonathan Aldave and Ramsey Williams as the Slammers’ ASEAN imports.
As for Bryant’s team, the Cobras are eyeing former PBA cager Marvin Cruz as one of their reinforcements. (Jonas Terrado)
