Manila, Philippines – HOW SAD It’s really, really sad losing a parent, especially when one feels a child didn’t love and take care of a mother or a father enough. Charice Pempengco must have felt this when her father Ricky met a tragic death.
Perhaps when Charice was already earning millions and millions she could have found a way to help financially her father, a construction worker. A few thousands every month or so would have been greatly appreciated.
Sure, Ricky Pempengco was a bad husband and father, into drugs and alcohol leading to his physical and mental disabilities. He abandoned wife Raquel (now sporting a blonde hair) and children Charice and Carl. Still, Charice could have helped him when he was alive. A father is a father no matter what.
Many people I talked to felt the same way.
Well, Charice gave her father a decent burial. And that Ricky’s death led to a family reconciliation. For that Charice should be lauded.
But then it was too late for the father to feel the love and care of her internationally famous daughter. Too late the heroine.
She (or he) who cries the loudest is probably the guiltiest.
Let’s all show our love for our parents while they are still alive.

RICKY LEE’S NEW NOVEL OUT SOON The long wait for Ricky Lee’s second novel is finally over. The book, “Si Amapola sa 65 na Kabanata“ (originally titled “Aswang“), will be launched on Nov. 27, Sunday, 3 p.m., at the Skydome, SM North EDSA. It is a political satire set in the popular hangout, T. Morato in Quezon City, about Amapola, a gay impersonator, who becomes a manananggal and is destined to save the Philippines.
To sample Lee’s literary genius in his unique pop form, here is an excerpt lifted from the novel:
“Isang malaki at mahabang laser light na nanggagaling sa isang barang tumutudla paitaas sa akin habang lumilipad ako, parang sinasabing kumain ka, kumain ka ng tao! Umiwas ako. Nagulo ang wig ko kaya inayos ko. Nakalimutan kong me hawak pala akong krus. Nalaglag ito. Sa isang political rally sa ibaba sa may tapat ng ABS-CBN.
“Mula sa point of view ng mga tao, na karamihan ay naroroon at umaasang mabibigyan sila ng pera ng kandidato, ang nakikita siguro nila ay isang krus na mabilis na bumubulusok pababa. Saka bumagsak sa lupa. Sa gitna nila mismo.“
Lee is more known as a screenwriter with over 160 produced movie scripts to his name with countless awards for films like “Anak,“ “Madrasta,“ “Moral,“ and “Himala,“ the Viewers’ Choice Award for CNN’s Asia Pacifidc Screen Awards.
