PNP retirees demand pension hike

By AARON B. RECUENCO

Manila, Philippines –A group of retired policemen urged yesterday the Department of Budget and Management (DBM) to make thousands of their members, some of them are suffering from various illnesses, happy this Christmas by releasing what they described to be a long-overdue increase in their pension payment.

Philippine National Police Retirees Association, Inc. (PRAI) even threatened to hold massive nationwide protest action on December 19 (Monday) should the DBM still refuse to release it within this week.

Retired Police Director Van Luspo, president PRAI, explained that the release of the pension adjustment should have been done within this year through the payment of the 2nd tranche of the PNP pension adjustment.

The PNP pension increase, he said, is part of the implementation of the Salary Standardization which was recommended by both the PNP and the Department of the Interior and the Local Government (DILG) and earlier approved by the Palace.

But Luspo said they are wondering why the DBM would not yet release it despite Malacanang’s approval.

Luspo said no less than DBM Secretary Florencio Abad was informed about the approval of the PNP pension adjustment through a letter from Executive Secretary Paquito Ochoa dated September 23 this year.

“The DBM, Budget and Management Division Bureau thru Director Tina Rose Marie Canda is still withholding the implementation, despite the instruction from His Excellency (President Aquino),” said Luspo.

Luspo said they have already informed Aquino of their plan to hold protest action in a letter they sent last week.

“May we inform His Excellency that the PNP Retirees Association, Inc., decided to hold a protest rally on December 19 in front of Department of Budget and Management,” the letter addressed to Aquino read.

Aside from the DBM main office, the PRAI Board said the same protest action will be simultaneously held in front of all regional offices of the DBM.
