Cebu drivers undergo drug test

CEBU CITY, Philippines – At least two of the 102 bus drivers who were subjected to a random drug test by the Land Transportation Office (LTO) 7 this week were found positive for illegal drug use.

LTO 7 Director Raul Aguiluz said initial test results showed two bus drivers plying the southern part of the Province of Cebu were found positive for drug use although the result would still have to be confirmed through a laboratory test in Manila.

The random drug test runs this week in line with the celebration of Christmas and New Year, where thousands of commuters take the bus to go home to their respective towns. Aguiluz, however, assured the public that the drug test would be extended until January.

“The random drug test will continue until all bus drivers who use drugs will be apprehended,” he said.

Since the LTO 7 launched the roadside drug test this year, Aguiluz said at least 150 of the more than 1,000 public utility vehicle drivers have already been found positive for drug use and their licenses have already been suspended.

Aguiluz said the drivers who used drugs won’t be allowed to drive.

Their vehicles have been impounded. After the confirmatory tests, the drivers’ licenses will be suspended for six months. (Mars W. Mosqueda, Jr.)
