16 hurt in Bukidnon quake

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY, Philippines – A 5.2 magnitude earthquake rocked some parts of Bukidnon province in Mindanao late Monday afternoon, injuring about 16 people and damaging several structures, including a shopping mall, department stores, a grocery mart and a hospital, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.

Phivolcs Researcher Julius Galdiano based in Sinait, Ilocos Sur said the quake occurred at 5:43 p.m. with its epicenter traced at 32 kilometers southwest of Malaybalay, Bukidnon in Mindanao with a depth of 1 kilometer. It was tectonic in origin.

Initial Phivolcs report said that Intensity 5 was felt in Valencia City, Bukidnon, and Intensity 3 in Quezon, Bukidnon.

The tremor was also felt in some parts of Northern Mindanao, northwest of Davao, and northeast of Cotabato.

Sketchy reports said the Roy Plaza Shopping Complex, Gaisano Mall, Baoseng Enterprises, the Valencia Sanitarium Hospital, and some grocery marts and stores sustained cracks due to the tremor.

“At least 23 houses within the city proper were also reported affected by the tremor,” said Major Eugene Julio C. Osias lV, the Army’s 4th Infantry (Diamond) Division spokesperson.

Patients confined at the Valencia Sanitarium Hospital were safely transferred to other hospitals in that city, according to Valencia City social worker Jerrys Timogan.

In an interview, Bukidnon Governor Alex P. Calingasan said the quake caused brownout in Valencia.

The Office of Civil Defense (OCD-Region 10) could not establish as of press time the worth of damage brought about by the earthquake.

Valencia City Mayor Leandro Jose H. Catarata mobilized all the city department heads to conduct damage assessment and ordered the city’s social welfare office to extend initial assistance to the victims.

Social workers were also deployed to Barangay Lumbayao, also in the same city, where a landslide occurred.
