Immigration arrests 2 human traffickers

Manila, Philippines – Immigration officers at the Clark airport in Angeles City have arrested two suspected human traffickers allegedly engaged in the recruitment and deployment of Filipina nightclub entertainers to Singapore, it was learned yesterday.

Bureau of Immigration (BI) Commissioner Ricardo David Jr. said Lourdes Castelo, a barangay captain in Calumpit, Bulacan, and Jenneth Cruz were intercepted last Sept. 17 at the Diosdado Macapagal International Airport (DMIA) as they were about to leave, along with three of their female victims, for Singapore.

The duo and two other suspects, including a Singaporean, were later charged by the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) for violating the anti-human trafficking act before the prosecutor’s office in Angeles City.

“I have instructed our immigration officers at the DMIA to be doubly vigilant in view of reports that human trafficking syndicates have diverted their operations to Clark to evade our strict screening procedures at the airports in Manila,” the BI chief said in a statement. (Jun Ramirez)
