Gun-for-hire ring busted

Manila, Philippines – Police busted a five-man gun-for-hire syndicate in a raid in their safehouse in Rizal and collared another notorious gunman in a follow-up operation in Batangas.

Director Samuel Pagdilao, Jr., chief of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG), said the first operation resulted in the arrest of six relatives who turned out to be members of the New People’s Army (NPA) before they allegedly became a gun-for-hire syndicate.

He identified them as Christopher Bermejo, 22; Lito Bermejo, 30; Prisco Bermejo, 67; Rene Bermejo, 23; and Leoncio Bermejo. They were collared in Sitio Upper Kilingan, Barangay San Jose, a mountainous boundary between Antipolo City and Baras town in Rizal.

Pagdilao said the group was responsible for the series of killings in Catanduanes, including a government militiaman. They were charged for several cases of murder in the province.

“The suspects were also tagged in the murder of a member of Citizens Armed Forces Geographical Unit (CAFGU). After the killing, the suspects fled to Rizal province afterward, where they continued with their gun-for-hire activities,” said Pagdilao.

In Batangas, CIDG operatives also collared Randy Carandang, 36, a former security guard turned gun-for-hire in a follow-up operation in Zigzag Hotel in Barangay Ibabaw, Cuenca town.

Chief Insp. Jay Agcaoili, head of the CIDG-Batangas, said Carandang is listed as the number 8 most wanted person with P90 thousand reward on his head. (Aaron Recuenco)
