Manila, Philippines - NORA, JAKE, AND KUYA GERMS — Congratulations to all the winners of the recent Star Awards for Music, given by the Philippine Movie Press Club. Special mention goes to Nora Aunor (Lifetime Achievement Award) and Jake Vargas (New Male Recording Artist of the Year for “Ngiti,” Dyna Music).
Nora and Jake happen to be closest to the Master Showman, the one and only German “Kuya Germs” Moreno. The Superstar is, of course, a dear friend from way, way back. Jake is his talent, the Olongapo boy he discovered and built up to be a fine singer and actor.
Kuya Germs, more than anyone else, is responsible for bringing Nora home. He signed her up with TV5 for the miniserye “Sa Ngalan ng Ina,” directed by Mario O’ Hara, which is still airing. TV5 plans to sign Nora up for a three-year exclusive contract.
Regal also got Nora for “Hototay,” meant for the December Metro Manila Film Festival. But Mother Lily Monteverde opted to look for another playdate for “Hototay” as there isn’t enough time to meet the filmfest deadline.
Aside from meriting good notices for his singing, Jake is also being cited for his fine performance in the GMA soap “Pahiram ng Isang Ina,” topbilled by Carmina Villaroel and directed by Joel Lamangan. Actress and director have very good words for Jake, who acts with depth and sensitivity.
PROOF POSITIVE – The success of Jake Vargas in singing and acting is proof positive that Kuya Germs hasn’t lost his so-called Magic Touch.
Look, for decades, from “GMA Supershow” to “That’s Entertainment” to “Walang Tulugan,” Kuya Germs has been discovering and building up stars – STARS mind you.
Highspeed doesn’t have to enumerate them, suffice it to say that they’re shining here and abroad.
To think that “Walang Tulugan” airs long after midnight. Still it has its fair share of audience in the Philippines and overseas, especially in the US.
Jackie Lou Blanco and John Nite are Kuya Germs’ co-hosts, doing a wonderful job.
Aside from Jake, “Walang Tulugan” has a number of promising newcomers. But let’s wait for Kuya Germs to build them up.
MEDIOCRE – Hope GMA Artist Center doesn’t take offense when I say that its talents are mostly mediocre. Those in charge have a lot of work to do to improve artists in terms of acting, of overall performance.
The talents of ABS-CBN Star Magic are miles and miles ahead.
Perhaps, Artist Center could learn a lesson or two from Mr. M (Johnny Manahan) of Star Magic. Or Kuya Germs, why not? (Ronald Constantino)
