DUMAGUETE CITY, Philippines (PNA) — Twelve breastfeeding mothers from Negros Oriental on Friday joined the 1st Breastfeeding Competition held at the Main Atrium of the Robinsons Mall in Dumaguete City.
The candidates are lactating mothers who are strictly practicing breastfeeding for their babies.
The 12 candidates are from the municipalities of Manjuyod, Santa Catalina, Valencia, San Jose, Zamboanguita, Basay, Vallehermoso, Amlan, Siaton, Dauin and Mabinay.
According to Dr. Edgardo Barredo, head of the Provincial Nutrition Council (PNC), the candidates were all carefully screened and evaluated based on the proper nutrition and health care for lactating mothers and their babies.
The candidates must have complete postpartum examination, complete immunization and other vaccines, he said.
Dr. Barredo said the PNC decided to hold the breastfeeding contest in order to encourage mothers to practice breastfeeding rather than using formula milk. He admitted that it is still a challenge to convince working mothers to practice breastfeeding but they are constantly expanding their information and education campaign.
Barredo added he will suggest to the members to the Provincial Nutrition Council to make the Breast Feeding Competition a regular activity during nutrition month celebration every July. He said the winner for the first breastfeeding contest will become the model mother and child for the breastfeeding campaign of the province.
In his message, Provincial Administrator Arnel Francisco said the provincial government will continue to support the breastfeeding program campaign.
The competition was held as part of the culminating activities for the local celebration of Nutrition Month this July.
